Obtaining a Defence security clearance

Obtaining a Defence security clearance

Requesting a Defence security clearance can be done using the New Ticket form with the "Request a Security Clearance" layout option on the form. However, it is important to note the following requirements for requesting a clearance.

  1. The applicant must be an Australian citizen (permanent residency and Visas do not qualify).
  2. There must be a clear business justification to require a security clearance. All work for Defence does not require a clearance, so a valid and reasonable justification must be provided on the form. Vague justifications will be rejected.
  3. Specific projects and/or work that the person will be involved in must be supplied in the justification.
  4. The cost of the security clearance must be accepted by the Manager or budget owner.
Once the ticket is submitted, the Penske Security Officer will ask the applicant's Manager for approval before being sent to the Defence Security Vetting Agency. The person will then receive a logon to the vetting website to complete the remainder of the paperwork required for clearance. This paperwork has a time limit before the application is cancelled.

Once a clearance has been obtained, the person must comply with all requirements of holding a clearance including Reporting Change of Circumstances, and international travel briefings and notifications. See the article I got my security clearance, now what? for more information.

Please review the attachments to this article for further information about the vetting process.
